Maha Shivratri is celebrated on 7th March 2016, this year. This is a Hindu festival celebrated, every year, on 13th night or 14th day in the Krishnapaksha that falls during Phalgun Month. This is symbolic of the convergence of Shakti with Shiva, i.e., the day Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and hence is considered the most holy.
This beautiful pic was taken on 18th february 2014, when we visited Kaner Math at Kolhapur. This awesome structure of Lord Shiva with his favourite Nandi is just outside the Siddhigiri Museum. A seren place, with cool breeze...a perfect place to get in touch with your inner self! An absolute refreshing place and we had a memorable time!
In India this is celebrated with festivities. Lord Shiva temples are decorated and throngs of devotees visit Lord Shiva Temple, even before the break of dawn, to pay their respects and seek HIS blessings. Devotees bring in Bael Patta | Bilva | Vilvum, a lota of milk, fruits and flowers. Devotees fast on this day with jaagran in the nights (stay awake beyond bed time), chanting Om Namah Shivay mantra.
Special fast-recipes and naivedhyam are prepared to celebrate this festival.
Amma makes delicious Paruppu Kanji along with Neer Kozhukattai or Jowar Veg Kozhukattai as Naivedhyam for Lord Shiva Puja at home.
