Aadi Perukku is a Hindu Tamil festival that is celebrated on the 18th day of Tamil month Aadi. Thus it is also known as Pathinettaam (18) Perukku (Risng). This usually falls mid July-August.
This year we celebrate Aadi Perukku on 3rd August 2015.
The significance of this festival is that we show our gratitude to Mother Nature for her bountiful blessing of WATER through adequate rainfall. This festival is a Monsoon festival and is observed predominately by women in TamilNadu to honour Mother Nature. Another folk lore is that on this day Goddess Parvathi is worshiped as it was on this day that with her meditation she evoked the divine Shankaranarayana form of Lord Shiva.
On this day as an offering flowers and varied preparations made with rice is offered at the banks of rivers, water reservoirs in gratitude and seeking the blessings for a bountiful monsoon and thus heralding prosperity through bumper crops.
"Kalanda Sadam" - Mixed variety of rice is the menu of the day. Normally the rice preparation offered comprises Nai Payasam or Shakara Pongal (sweet), Puliyodarai | Tamarind Rice, Lemon Rice, Coconut Rice, Jeera Rice, Milagu Jeera Rice, Pepper Rice, Ellu Sadam, Peanut Rice, Mint Rice, Coriander Rice, Amla Rice, Curry Leaf Rice and Curd Rice. This is served along with Aviyal and Papadam, Ulundu Vadai.
This year we have made as Naivedhyam Nai Payasam, Puliyodarai | Tamarind Rice, Coconut Rice, Milagu Jeera Rice, Ellu Sadam and Curd Rice.
