Nellikai Sadam | Amla Rice | Gooseberry Rice

Come winters...and Appa will scout for the freshest Nellikai | Amla | Gooseberry in our local market. Its a fixed schedule - his requests wrt Nellikai are - Amla Ginger Refresher, Nellikai Urgai | Pickle, Nellikai Archukallaki and Nellikai Rice. The first three can be made and stored for a year. In pursuit of the Nellikai brigade, today Amma made the Vitamin C enriched Amla Rice! Simply delicious!

Amla Rice Gooseberry Rice Nellikai Rice


Ingredients:
1 cup Basmati Rice, cooked and fluffed
1/4 cup Nellikai | Amla | Gooseberry, grated
1/8 tsp Haldi | Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Channa Dal
1/2 tsp Rai | Mustard Seeds
1/2 tsp White Til | Sesame Seeds
1 tblsp Peanut | Groundnut
2 Sukhi Lal Mirch | Dried Red Chilli, broken into 2 pieces
2 Green Chilli, finely chopped
2 sprigs Kadhi Patta | Curry Leaves
A pinch Hing | Asafoetida Powder
1 tblsp Oil
To taste Salt

Method:
  • In a frying pan, heat the oil and add peanut, rai, channa dal, white til, dried red chilli, curry leaves, chopped green chillies and hing. 
  • When the rai splutters and the channa dal changes to a golden brown colour, add the grated amla and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add the cooked basmati rice and salt. Mix well on a low flame. Cover and cook for 1 minute.
  • After 1 minute, switch off the gas and transfer to a serving plate.
  • Serve hot with Pappadams, Mango Thokku Pickle, Curd and any dry sabzi like Spiced Babycorn Fry.
This Nelliaki Sadam is so tasty that I like to carry it as my lunch for work! It tastes heavenly with just curds!
