Akshaya Trithiya

21st April 2015 is being observed as Akshaya Trithiya.

Akshaya Trithiya is celebrated on the third day of the new moon of Vaishaka Month and is considered as one of the most auspicious day of the year.

On this auspicious day of Akshaya Trithiya,
wishes all it's lovely followers and well wishers a year full of good luck and prosperity.
May this year be bright with the colours of happiness and
sweet with the taste of success in each of your positive endeavors!

Many references are made as to the significance of this day. Few which I have read and some as passed on by Amma Appa are :
  • "Akshaya" is a Sanskrit word meaning "That which never diminishes".
  • This is considered as the day Goddess Annapoornashweri and Parshuram, Lord Vishnu's Avataar, were born.
  • It is believed that Yudhishtara received the Akshaya Patra and this he used to serve food for the needy in his kingdom.
  • It was on this day that Kanaka Dhara Shloka was recited by Adi Shankara as a grateful gesture to a poor couple whose home he visited and there he was offered even the lone gooseberry that they had.
  • It is believed that in the Vedic scriptures it is mentioned that knowledge gained or charity given on this auspicious day is very fruitful. Hence this day is considered very pious and prosperous to start a new business venture. Many make it a point to buy gold objects on this day.
  • It was on this day that pleased by Kubera's worship, Lord Shiva blessed him with wealth and also made him the custodian of Wealth along with Goddess Lakshmi.
At home we worship Goddess Annapoorneshwari and Goddess Lakshmi. Amma makes a naivedhyam which varies every year. This year as naivedhyam thali we prepared, Amba Wadi and Mango Coconut Burfi for sweet, Bajra Jowar Wheat Roti and Steamed Rice along with Karela Poricha Kuzhambu and Mambazha Pulissery along with homemade curd, Narakku Mangai Pickle, Green Moong Sprouts and grated carrot | diced capsicum for salad.

It is a practice at home since I can recall, that any dish prepared, the first offering is made to the Lord as a gratitude for all that he bestows on us. Only then we set to relish the food that Amma has prepared with so much of love and affection!
