Bharvi Mirchi - a mouthwatering Appetizer | Side Dish made with Green Chilli Peppers stuffed with Chickpea Flour and aromatic Indian spices!

Few years back while Amma Appa were in the local market, Amma saw a lady selecting fresh Green Chilli Peppers. Amma knew that with these stuffed fritters can be made and she wanted to know how else this could be used. So she asked this lady who said that she was buying to make Bharvi Mirchi a Gujrati recipe. She was sweet enough to let know the ingredients and procedure.

Over the years Amma has altered it to suit our tastes as well as with minimal oil. We love this and I like to have a couple of these as Tea Time Snack too! These are available fresh in our local market and so this time we got these. A great dish to relish in Mumbai's Winter!

METHOD
  • Preparing Mirchi
    • Wash Mirchi well. Spread them on a kitchen towel and gently wipe them dry. This is important. The mirchi must be dry.
    • Slit Mirchi with a sharp knife such that the mirchi is still whole and not cut into two parts. The slit is to enable stuffing the masala mixture.
    • Gently scoop out and discard the seeds.
  • Preparing Masala Mixture
    • In a non stick pan heat oil and roast besan till it becomes fragrant on a medium flame. Stir continuously so that besan does not get burnt
    • Add all the spice mix mentioned for Masala Mixture and saute for 2 minutes.
    • Switch off the gas and transfer to a bowl.
    • Once the masala mixture is of room temperature, sprinkle little water and mix well to get a crumbly texture of the masala mixture. Keep aside.
  • Stuffing Mirchi
    • Stuff each Mirchi with the Masala Mixture nicely and keep aside.
  • Preparing Bharvi Mirchi
    • In a non stick kadhai, heat oil.
    • Gently place the stuffed mirchi inside the kadhai and give it a gentle toss so that the oil gets coated on the mirchi.
    • Spread the mirchi across the surface of the kadhai.
    • Cover cook on low flame for 5 to 6 minutes.  After 3 minutes, sprinkle little water so that the mirchi and the stuffing cooks well. This ensure the oil used is less and the taste delicious. In between check the mirchi and stir them a bit.
    • Once done, transfer to a serving plate.
  • Serve hot  as a Starter or Side Dish with Roti | Paratha | Puri | Rice.
