Karthigai Deepam

Karthigai Deepam | Thirukarthigai is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Murugan | Karthik.
This normally falls on the Full Moon Day | Pournami of Karthigai month as per the Tamil calendar. At Tiruvannamalai there is a grandoise celebration on this day. To witness the Makarjyoti thast is lit on top of the Tiruvannamalai hill, throngs of devotees gather to be a part of this divine experience. The Makarajyoti which can be seen around the Shrine upto 30 meters or so, is symbolic of Lord Shiva's appearance in the form of this light.
For Tamilians this day is the celebration of the unique bond between sisters and brothers. Brothers normally visit their sister and offer them gifts. The sisters normally make a variety of delicacies for their brother. In the wee hours of this day, children get up without any grudge as they get to burst crackers!
During the evening puja, specific sweets and savories are prepared as naivedyam. Just as in Diwali, colorful Rangolis | Kolams are drawn in front of the homes and lamps | Agal Vilakku's are lit.
