Saamai Arisi Upama | Vari Tandul Upama | Samo Upama | Little Millet Upama

Amma in her quest to include the nutritious Millets in our daily diet, has taken a liking to Saamai Rice. Saamai Arisi called as Little Millet | Chama | Sama | Kutki | Vari Tandul | Samo Rice belongs to the Millet family. You can make Upama | Khichadi | Payasam | Dosa | Idli from this.

Today being Vaikuntha Ekadashi Amma chose to make this sans onions.

Saamai Arisi Upama | Little Millet Upama

INGREDIENTS

1 cup Saamai Rice | Little Millet
3 cups Water
1 tblsp Carrot, diced
1 tblsp Peas
3 Green Chillies, finely chopped
1/2" Adrak | Ginger, finely chopped
1 sprig Kadhi Patta | Curry Leaves
1 tsp Rai | Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Urad Dal
1 tsp Oil
To taste Salt

METHOD
  • Soak the Saamai Rice for about 20 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
  • In a non-stick Kadhai, heat oil and add rai, urad dal and curry leaves.
  • When the rai splutters, add the carrots and peas. Saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add water and salt.
  • When the water comes to a boil, add the drained Saamai Rice and mix well.
  • When this comes to a boil, keep the gas flame on low and cover and cook for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Check to see if Saamai Rice is cooked.
  • Once done, transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Serve hot with any Pickle.
I love this with a little sprinkle of sugar. Amma Appa prefer to relish this with Vadumangaa pickle.

We have used:
1. Til Sona Oil
2. Tata Salt Lite

Note:
a. If you are adding onions, chop them and add them after the rai splutters. Saute the onions till they become translucent and then add the remaining vegetables.
b. You can also add diced potatoes, beans and sprouts!
