Karadaiyan Nonbu | Savitri Nonbu Vritham


Karadaiyan Nonbu | Savitri Nonbu Vritham is observed on 15th March 2015 between 04:00 hrs and 04:30 hrs IST.

With its rich cultural heritage and traditions, almost each day of the year is a celebration of life, relations in India. One such observance by Tamil Brahmin women is Karadaiyan Nonbu | Savitri Nonbu Vritham - a celebration wherein women pay their reverence to Princess Savitri by doing puja and breaking their fast by having Karadai Adais with butter.Similar observances in terms of Vat Savitri Puja, Karwa Chauth is observed in rest of India.

Legend says that it was specifically at the hour when Panguni month begins with the end of Masi Month in Tamil Calender, that Princess Savitri, with her unparalleled devotion to her husband Satyavan, saved his life from the clutches of Yama. Hence, each year at this particular hour, women, married, single, young girls - wear yellow coloured dress and offer their puja to Goddess Kamakshi | Parvati.

Women fast till this puja. Special Karadai Adais are prepared. Kolam | Rangoli is made and on top of that Ala Elai | Banayan Leaf is placed. Sweet Adai and Savoury Adai along with unmelted Butter, freshly made, are placed. Fruits, Betel Leaves with Haldi-Kumkum |Turmeric-Vermilion sachets, a sacred yellow thread with flower and/or turmeric pieces strung on it are offered as Naivedhyam.

While doing this puja, women chant the following mantra - 

" Urugadha Vennayam Oru Adaiyum vaithu Nonbu notren
Oru nallum en Kannavar ennai piriyamal iruka vendum"

( "I offer Butter and Adai with the prayer 
that not a single day  of my life, I am separated from my husband")

The significance is that the married women pray for a long and healthy life for their spouse and a blissful married life, whereas young girls and unmarried women pray to get the spouse of their desire. After this chant, the women wear the sacred yellow thread around their neck, break their fast by eating Karadai Adai with butter.
