Oats Venpongal

Amma makes it a point that atleast 5 times in a week in some form healthy oats gets introduced in our diet. Appa sometimes would prefer something else to the plain oats kanji. Its then that usually Amma makes this lovely delicious Oats Venpongal.

Venpongal

Ingredients:
1 cup Oats
1/2 cup Moong Dal
1/2 " Fresh Adrak | Ginger, freshly chopped
1/2 tsp Jeera | Cumin Seeds
1/2 tsp Kali Miri | Black Pepper, coarsely ground
1/2 tsp Rai | Mustard Seeds
1/8 tsp Hing | Asafoetida Powder
1 Green Mirchi | Chilli, finely chopped
1 sprig Kadhi Patta | Curry leaves
1 tblsp Ghee | Clarified Butter
To taste Salt

Method:
  • Wash and soak the moong dal for about  1 hour. They must be fully soaked.
  • In a pan, slightly warm the oats for about 2 minutes and keep aside.
  • In the same pan add the ghee and when it is hot add the rai and curry leaves. When the rai splutters, add the hing, jeera, adrak, green chilli and black pepper and saute for a minute.
  • Add the soaked Moong Dal and water and mix well.
  • When the Moong dal is cooked in approximately 5 minutes, add the slightly roasted oats and salt and mix well. Since the Moong Dal is nicely soaked, the cooking time is very less.
  • Cook for 2 minutes till done.
  • Serve the Oats Venpongal with any chutney.
