Vazhakkai Maikuvarrati | Raw Banana Sabzi

A simple but super delicious sabzi - Vazhakkai Maikuvarrati. This Raw Banana Sabzi is a wonderful side dish along with Thaiyr Sadam | Curd Rice, Steamed Rice with Sambhar | Rasam combination!

Vazhakkai Maikuvarrati Raw Banana Sabzi

Ingredients:
2 Raw Banana | Plaintain | Vazhakkai
1/4 tsp Haldi | Turmeric Powder
1/4 cup water | approximately
1 tsp Oil | Chutta-Ennai
To taste Salt

Method:
  • Wash and dry the raw bananas. Make a slight cut on the stem portion and gently pull the topmost layer of the peel. The entire peel shouldn't be removed. Cut the bananas to 1/2 " cubes. Put them in a bowl of water so that they do not change colour.
  • In a pan add the drained banana cubes and water. Water is just for cooking the banana..hence it should be very little.
  • Add salt and haldi. Mix well.
  • cover and cook on a low flame for 2 minutes. Open and check if the bananas are cooked. The cooked bananas will be soft when you press, but will still hold their shape.
  • Add oil to the cooked bananas and mix well..this is what in Tamil we call as Maikuvarrati - Maiku is oil and Varrati is roasting in the oil!
  • After a minute, switch off the gas.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Serve Vazhakkai Maikuvarrati | Raw Banana Sabzi as a side dish along with Steamed Rice and any Sambhar | Rasam or Thaiyr Sadam | Curd Rice.
The taste for this sabzi is mainly from the Chutta-Ennai...oil which we have used once for frying any papad.

A very easy and phataphat recipe...tastes really awesome!
