5th January 2015, Monday, is being celebrated as Thiruvathirai | Thiruvathira | Ardhra Darshanam

The significance of Thiruvathirai is that on this day Lord Shiva created the "sacred big wave" with which the entire Universe was created.  Thiruathira stands for Thiru --> Revered Athirai --> Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva also known as Athirayan and this day, which is the Pournima | Full moon day falling in the Margazhi Month (December - Janueary) is celebrated to pay respect to Lord Shiva.

On this day Lord Shiva Temples across the world there is grand clebration. The Shri Natarajar Temple at Chidamabaram, Tamil Nadu, celebraete their annual festival on thsi day in a grand manner. Idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati are taken out of the temple premises in a grand procession on this day.
